The Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is a small companion dog that has it all. He is a dog with character and incredibly charming, and in his homeland – the united states – rightly called the “American Gentleman”.
The race belongs in spite of it’s name to the bulldog type of dogs. In Boston, Massachusetts/USA, the Boston Terrier was bred as one of the few true american breeds in the seventies of the last century for dog sporting events on the basis of the English Bulldog and the white English Terrier. In 1891 he was recognized at the American Kennel Club as an American Bull Terrier, also called “Boston Bull” and from 1893 on termed as Boston Terrier.
In the course of time, his standart has changed, and so we are now seeing a small, intelligent companion dog that can perfectly integrate into our modern society.
He has a friendly spirited nature and is very people oriented. As a happy go lucky dog he is an excellent playmate for children. In his “pack” he behaves very affectionate, but also shows alert without being a yapper. Because of his appearance, the Boston Terrier radiates a harmony wich is highly appreciated by many dog owners. His facial expressions and gestures are unique.
On the one hand a Boston Terrier has no trouble taking walks or doing sports activities with his companion, and on the other hand he is content with shorter walks if the circumstances arise. He also feels comfortable in a city appartment if he recieves a occupation by his family.
His short coat makes him to a clean and easy-care dog. However, he is sensitiv to cold because of the lack of undercoat than his fellows with long hair. This should be thought of by keeping a Boston Terrier. There is no word needed, saying that the Boston Terrier is not a kennel dog.
Today, the minor changed race standart from 1990 is observed in whole world. He distinguishes three weight classes: lightweight (under 6,8kg), medium (6,8 kg to 9 kg) and heavy (9 kg to 11,3 kg). This range shows that the Boston Terrier is not a overbred lap dog, but a self confident, intelligent companionof the human being – just a real dog.
